Visconteo Castle is one of the most beautiful attractions of the city placed in the old center. Raised in 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti, it was planned to be a location that emerged in a wide green parc part of which remained until today. Every weekend at the Castle has held some type of activity: sometimes art exhibitions of contemporary authors, other times are organized manifestations to recall the millennial traditions of the Lombardy people.
On 08-09 June 2019 at the Castle was organized “Il Paglio del Ticino” - a celebration to recall the culture and traditions in Medieval style with a parade of all the social classes, starting from Duke and Duchess to farmers and masters of all kind of professions form the Epoque, accompanied by drummers and waving flags, warriors and archeries. Moreover, within the walls of the Castle, you could find camps with caravans and several expositions with clothing and accessories, swords and weapons, dishes and cooking, musicians and entertainment for the court like the man with an eagle and the lady with an owl.
This celebration starts in the morning and finishes in the late afternoon with many interesting moments during the day. It begins with drummers and flags passing, followed by a long runway of costumes, starting from the Castle and going through the old city to arrive at the Old Bridge over the Ticino river. There will be concluded with a competition between several groups in different battles to win “the Palio”.
It was interesting and fascinating, a good way to spend time on a Saturday or Sunday. Recommend visiting some of these festivities, especially if you have elementary school kids because it will help to emerge them in history and traditions! They will be amazed by all the surroundings and you’ll get to spend some good time together.
