These are only some of the biggest ADVANTAGES of this style:
- Since you’ll dress in neutral and achromat colors, the attention will go directly and 100% on your personality! You will be in the center of the attention, not your dress, pants, shoes or bag. That’s why it will best suit all the professionals that need to draw attention to their personality, make stand out their talents and knowledge without distractions.
- This style requires a minimum quantity of clothing. It works as a capsule wardrobe, where all the pieces can be perfectly combined one with another and mixed as you desire, getting the maximum outfits combinations.
- You’ll save so much money because you don’t need to spend on trends, neither update your wardrobe every season. What you have and need are good quality classical pieces in neutral colors that can stay in your closet for years and will still be authentic. Though, you can integrate some trends, but in small doses, and better if accessories.
- It will save you time because you don’t need to think about what will go with what; you pick up from your wardrobe a top and pair with the bottom that you want. Particularly, if you have a day job where you need to get dress early in the morning – this is a perfect solution!
As in any style, there are some DISADVANTAGES:
- Since there are no “distractive” details on these clothes, the must-have rule is that they must be made of excellent materials and perfectly tailored! At first, it may cost you some extra dollars to invest in essential pieces, but keep in mind that these items you’ll wear almost every day and for years and years to come, …so at the end, cost-per-wear will worth the investment.
- Another important aspect will be in your accurateness: always be aware to have fresh nails, clean washed hair, perfect skin, minimal accurate makeup that radiate youthfulness, pure and high-quality jewelry.
Now, if you love this style, then here are the 15 GUIDANCE RULES TO FOLLOW, that will help you create the perfect WARDROBE for every day, that you can wear in a MINIMALISTIC and OUTSTANDING way. It will make your personality unique, memorable, and stylish:
1. Every look must incorporate these three elements: structured silhouettes and textures, architectural shapes and cuts, and details.
2. You must have at least two-three different good quality basic White Shirts! These shirts shall be oversized or at least loose-fit like a masculine shirt, with or without a pocket, with shaped architectural elements like asymmetrical collar or length, oversized cuffs, puffy sleeves, etc. This category of items is a strong statement piece to all your outfits.
3. Will be great to have also one or two striped shirts and in light shades of blue, grey, or beige colors to be able to vary a little bit your wardrobe. Always look for models that are loose-fit, in good cotton and linen, that holds shape. You can wear some prints like stripes and squared, but they must always be of a masculine vibe, and minimum colors like white-blue, white-pink, or light blue with white stripes.
4. Don’t forget about the basic tops! Besides white shirts, you must also have some excellent quality white, beige, black and camel t-shirts, tank tops, camisoles, turtlenecks, and loose-fit jumpers.
5. Basic jeans in classic blue with regular fit and classical waist, ankle-length that perfectly sits on your figure, is another must-have in your minimalistic closet. If you live in a country with long and warm seasons (like Italy), I also suggest to have a pair of white jeans – they always look classy and unexpected in combination with a blacktop. You can wear jeans with any of the mentioned above.
6. Classical pants with pinches in masculine style and high waist (suit pants) like in the Nineties is another master-piece into a modern minimalistic wardrobe. Excellent in all the basic colors, from black, blue, and grey, to a camel, khaki, even with Prince of Wales checked print and stripes.
7. Blazers and jackets are great – they will help you create the structure in your look and give that status appeal of personality and business-looking. Search for models with padded shoulders, maybe slightly tailored on the waist or oversized.
8. Suits! Pants suits, shorts suits, bermuda suits, any suits in all basic colors, that have simple shapes and cuts, no extra decorative details will be great to complete your minimalist style. You can dress them in office, at meetings, on a day out – they will always make you feel more status and elegant.
9. In any outfit you choose to wear, distribute accents - either on top, either on the bottom, by wearing something tight and something loose. For example, if you want to wear a body tank top, pair it with a pair of wide-leg pants; but if you're going to wear a loose fit shirt with puffy sleeves on top, then on the bottom choose a pair of skinny jeans or some classical straight pants. This way, your figure will look balanced.
10. Leather jackets, shirts, pants, dresses in the basic neutral colors will be a great investment and will make such a statement everytime you wear it! Particularly for those special occasions you need to look a bit over the top! By the way, there is no need to buy items in natural leather; you can entirely choose eco-leather pieces that are of good quality.
11. Skits & dresses mini or midi-length A-shape (trapeze) or pencil skirts will be the best investment and easy to pair with any kind of tops.
12. Best shoes for a minimalist style will be classical loafers in black or beige natural leather, mules, strappy sandals, and white sneakers for the warm season; while Chelsea boots will do great for the cold season. For special occasions, I would recommend having in your wardrobe a pair of beautiful black or nude pumps.
13. Choose structured bags, the ones that hold their shapes, made of quality materials (can be leather or other), and with minimal hardware. The most universal models are the cross-body bags (like the Box by Celine). To make your minimalistic wardrobe more joyful, you can choose a deep color like burgundy, chocolate brown, dark olive, or caramel. These colors will go great with your neutrals and chromatic colors.
14. Outerwear must be all classical pieces, in my opinion sufficiently a beige or black trench coat (Burberry style) for the warm season and a traditional wool or cashmere coat (long slightly oversized wrap and belted Max Mara style for tall women & simple button-up chesterfield type for Petites) for the cold season.
15. Accessories: less is more is the general rule! Sunglasses– will do models with minimalistic frames and simple black or brown lenses (like rounded by Ray-Ban or squared as those from Tom Ford). Minimalistic jewelry: simple but enjoyable earrings, bracelets, and necklaces (especially for V-neck and deep-cut neckline lovers). Classical hairstyles, accurate ponytails, up-does, or wavy out-of-duty hair. Minimum makeup, and if you want a statement, let it be the perfect red lipstick.
To make it your Style, learn to layer things, and create compelling, unexpected combinations. In the wintertime, you can wear a turtleneck underneath a classical shirt as we see so often on street style fashionistas; or a tank with a shirt and a jacket on top. Keep visible all the underneath layers by opening some buttons of the shirt. Another way is to wear a shirt underneath, and a jumper on top, keeping the shirt’s sleeves rolled up and button at sight. Get Inspired from Pinterest, Runways, luxury on-line stores like Matchesfashion, Farfetch, My Theresa and Net-à-Porter (where from I’ve used these pictures as examples).
